Step 1

Know your product  

To be knowledgeable about South Africa and the local area / province is a pre-requisite to follow a career in tourist guiding / tour operations. Clients have the right to ask questions and receive correct and insightful responses from the guides, and get value for their money.

Step 2

Operate within the legal framework

It is essential to understand legislation, rules, regulations, code of conducts, and operating procedures, and  the required response to ensure legal compliance and safety of tourists. The prevention (including risk assessment) of health/safety incidences, and response to emergencies, are mandotory skills to acquire. 

Step 3

Conduct a guided walk  

The most basic tours involve walking  and requires both presentation skills, and specific guiding techniques. Interepretation is more than just giving information, and it is important to master the art of designing and preparing a guided tour according to themes, and to develop story-lines.

Step 4

Conduct a city tour in a vehicle

Understanding the urban landscape, and preparing a well-balanced orientation / highlight tour (including story-telling and using anecdotes). Pointing out points of interest timeously, linking it with well-researched, entertaining interpretation and commenting on incidentals.

Step 5

Transfer and manage a group

Procedures and techniques for welcoming clients at prominent arrival venues e.g. airports and ports, providing information en route using a microphone, and checking-in and out of hotels. Understanding group dynamics and phases, different types of personalities, dealing with different situations, and motivating the group over longer trips.   

Step 6

Start a business

The requirements and principles for setting up a tour operator business, administrative and logistical tasks, knowing the tourism products, designing and costing itineraries, and marketing the services.
